Preparing for the VP of Finance Search

In the last article “Understanding the VP of Finance Role” we shared a few key points on how the role has evolved and how they can benefit your organization.

This article is short but we'll share how you can prepare for your VP of Finance search once you decide that’s the direction you want to go. It can be overwhelming just thinking about it, but we’ll walk you through the process here.

Understanding Your Needs

Before you dive in, take a moment to reflect on what your organization truly needs. This isn't just about finding someone good with numbers (though that's certainly important!). Think about your company's unique challenges and goals.

  • Are you a startup navigating rapid growth?

  • Do you need someone to guide you through funding rounds?

  • Are you looking for a financial strategist or a cost-cutting expert?

Gather your leadership team and have an open, honest discussion about your expectations. Create a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves. It's okay to be specific – this is an important decision for your company's future.

Crafting the Perfect Job Description

Now that you know what you're looking for, it's time to put it into words. Writing a great job description can be tricky, but don't stress – we've all had our stumbles here. The key is to be clear about the role's responsibilities while also showcasing what makes your company special.

Ask yourself:

  • What unique opportunities can you offer a top-tier VP of Finance?

  • What's exciting about your company culture or mission?

  • Is there potential for significant impact on the company's financial strategy?

  • Are there opportunities for professional growth and development in this role?

  • Does your company offer cutting-edge financial technology or innovative practices?

Remember to highlight both technical skills and soft skills. Your ideal candidate should be able to crunch numbers and explain complex concepts to non-finance team members. Clear communication can make a world of difference!

Internal vs. External Recruitment

Here's a question I often hear: "Should we promote from within or bring in someone new?" The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Both approaches have their merits, and the best choice depends on your specific situation.

Internal recruitment can be great if you have a talented finance leader ready for the next step. It's often quicker and more cost-effective, plus you already know they're a cultural fit.

External executive search might be the way to go if you need specialized experience or a fresh perspective. Maybe you're entering new markets or planning a major expansion – an outside expert could bring valuable insights.

If you do choose to work with an executive search firm, take your time to find the right partner. Look for firms with experience in finance executive placements and make sure they really understand your company's needs and values.

A Word of Encouragement

Remember, choosing a VP of Finance is a significant decision, but it's also an opportunity to bring amazing talent into your organization. Take your time, trust your instincts, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

You've got this! And if you have any questions or want to share your own experiences, please don't hesitate to reach out.

We're all in this together, and I'm here to support you on this journey.
